TORUS conventions
To find a tune in the index, consider a tune as a sequence of jumps up or down, encode this sequence as a sequence of us and ds, then use this sequence to find the tune in the index. Some conventions:
- Count two notes of the same pitch as a jump up.
- Ignore all notes before the first complete bar.
- Many tunes have several slightly different versions, and so may appear more than once in the index, but if in doubt try the least ornamented version first.
An example
Consider the tune Happy birthday to you. Ignoring the two notes on Happy, the first complete bar starts on birth. The tune jumps down from birth to day, so the sequence starts with d. The tune then jumps up from day to to, so the sequence becomes du.
Continuing, the sequence of jumps is
(Happy) birth- | day | to | you, | Hap- | py | birth- | day | to | ... | ||||||||
d | u | d | d | u | u | d | u | ... |
So, if you enter the sequence dudduudu in the search box on the main page then TORUS will find the tune Happy birthday to you (amongst others).
